- - - - | Antique Curly Maple Mortar and Pestle Item # 4155Period American antique Curly Maple Mortar and Pestle "antique mortar and pestle" The mortar, or bowl,is made of wild curly maple wood, measures 8 inches tall and 5 and one half inches in diameter. The bowl measures 5 and one half inches deep. The pestle, the bat shaped tool, measures 11 inches long, the handle end is 1 and one half inches in diameter and the mashing end measures 2 and one half inches in diameter, and it is beveled. The mortar is used to hold grains, herbs, and other food substances and the pestle is used to pulverize these substances within the mortar. circa 1780. This is the only curly maple mortar we have ever had the good fortune to sell. The curl is so pronounced you can run hand over the mortar and feel each curl in the wood.
